Team Leadership in Action Workshop
Inspire your People - Two-day Team Leadership Skills Course

Day 1:
|
Introduction – why leadership matters; the problems of achieving effective performance at work,
the key role of the leader.
What is Leadership? – discussion by the course delegates either as a whole or in small groups on
what they feel leadership to be. An examination of the Leadership Coaching Cycle and how that can be
applied.
First Exercise: some of the group, with one of them appointed as leader, carry out a simple task.
The remainder of the group observe what the leader does to complete the task, the way in which the team
is managed and how each individual is engaged with the whole activity. Discussion and conclusions from
the observation of the first exercise.
Second Exercise: this time two teams take part and the remainder observe the leader’s actions to
complete the task, again looking at how the team is managed and the engagement of the individuals in
the execution of the task. For this exercise, time is allotted for planning. Discussion and
conclusions from the observation of the second exercise.

Film: The Goal, which shows the story of a leader in a manufacturing setting. Discussion
and examination of the conclusions that can be drawn from the film and what the leader did to achieve
the objectives set by the Corporate Executive, how he worked with his team and via that team helped
others to engage in the overall strategy for the plant.
Completion of Day 1: a discussion about the use of the Leadership Coaching Cycle drawing on
examples and conclusions from the day. This discussion will also introduce and use the Reflection
Cycle, as illustrated on the left.

Day 2:
Discussion in small groups on the applications of the conclusions from yesterday to the day to
day work as a manager and team leader.
Third exercise: running a meeting on a practical problem that arises in the company. Examination
of how the leaders could have made the discussion group more effective by applying the Coaching
Cycle.
Implications of the importance of team leadership for the organisation.
Discussion in groups and in plenary sessions on such matters as the structure below the level of
those on the course and what they can do about it; organising of time so as to be able to bring people
together; the training of team leaders at lower levels in the structure – the introduction of the ‘Flight
Crew’.
Action Session: individuals write down the actions they will take on return to their work so as
to be more effective in the leadership of their group.
Plenary session in which each member reports his or her proposed actions, thus suggesting steps
for others on the course.
Course conclusion and final remarks.
Team Leadership in Action Workshop: Venue & Booking Details
The workshop, which is aimed at team leaders and supervisors, will be held at our Training Centre in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, UK and
will be delivered by
Ted Hutchin who has an MA in Human Resource Management and a PhD in
Organisational Psychology. He is a
Theory of Constraints Expert and an Industrial Fellow at Nottingham University.
This is an organisation-specific programme and as such, dates are arranged on a bespoke basis.
The minimum number of attendees is 4.
The fee is £600 plus VAT per person.
