Leading the Project & Programme Team

Three-day programme for project-driven companies to develop high-performance teams within project management using Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) and including the creation of the 'Project Flight Crew'

The programme starts with a two-day Project & Programme Management workshop, outlined below; this is followed by a day in-house, working with the key Project Team, or ‘Flight Crew’, who will lead the implementation.

The workshop explores the dramatic improvement to the bottom-line that Critical Chain - the Theory of Constraints (TOC) approach to project management - can achieve. The workshop uses a number of practical exercises and presentations in order to determine the real issues that affect companies in their desire to achieve the goals of profitability and satisfying the market in terms of delivery performance, due date and budget adherence, with zero defect as a given.

Leading the Project Team - 3-day Programme using TOC principles
Day 1: the single project environment

  • Why do projects overrun?
  • Why is the specification always under threat?
  • Why are budgets never enough?
  • The response from the perspective of TOC - Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM)
  • The lessons from TOC guru Dr Eli Goldratt's books The Goal and Critical Chain
  • The Five Focusing Steps

Interactive exercises are used to explore the nature of the problems facing project managers and resource managers, and the underlying causes are determined. The exercises are then run a second time using CCPM rules and comparisons are made between the two sets of results. The steps necessary to achieve the higher level of performance achieved by using CCPM will be covered at the end of day one.

Day 2: the multi-project environment

A series of practical exercises will show the damaging effects of multi-tasking, and scheduling exercises will show how the basics of CCPM for multi-projects are achieved.

Key areas covered include:
  • The particular problems of multi-project environments
  • The need for alignment of both purpose and execution throughout the organization
  • Working through the necessary stages of change in order to implement CCPM for multi-project environments into your organization
  • The use of CCPM software to support and manage the complexity of multi-project environments
  • The need to train personnel so they are capable of creating and validating project networks
  • The need to create and support focused teams
  • Case studies from the UK and USA
Day 3:

This is a full day, spent on-site with the core Project Team, or 'Flight Crew', covering:

  • Developing the Flight Crew and ensuring they have the necessary knowledge and understanding to lead the implementation
  • The key steps in the implementation of the CCPM approach
  • Developing the outline implementation plan
  • Where to start tomorrow
